In partnership with Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), BIM offers several learning tasks to educate elementary students about financial literacy. Tasks were created for the following programs: English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Visual Arts, Drama and Science and Technology. All 12 tasks (4 per cycle) are available in both French and English.
When carrying out these tasks, students will develop their understanding of:
- the concepts of savings, expenses, income, money, earning, budgeting, bartering and scarcity,
- the difference between a want and a need,
- the consequences of good and bad financial decisions.

Elementary Cycle One

To answer the question “How much does it cost?” students will explore the concept of object value based on the time and resources required to manufacture them.

Kim’s Necklace
Mathematics
Through the question “What creates the value of an object?” students explore the concepts of scarcity and object value. Students will develop a sense of the concept of scarcity by comparing two necklaces of different values.

The Fair
Mathematics
Students explore the concept of budgeting. They plan a day at the fair by selecting rides and purchasing a snack. They answer the question “Can I manage my personal budget?”

My Dream, My Goal
Mathematics
Students explore the concepts of work, earnings and saving. They answer the question "How long will it take me to save enough money to buy what I’m dreaming of?"
Elementary Cycle Two

Koni Spends Too Much
Mathematics
Students are asked to create a reimbursement plan. They answer the question "How can I spend in a way that takes into account my needs and wants?"

I Equip My Team
Mathematics
Students explore the concept of budgeting by planning the purchase of equipment for a hockey team, while considering budget constraints. They answer the question "How am I going to stay within my budget?"

Students explore the concept of bartering by answering the following question: "How can we develop an exchange network in our school?"

The Piggy Bank
Visual Arts
Using recycled materials, students explore the concept of saving while making a functional three-dimensional piggy bank. They answer the question "What is a piggy bank for?"

Science and Technology
Students are asked to design a product based on a need they identify. They answer the questions "If I were an entrepreneur or an inventor, what product would I want to create?” and “What consumer need would it address?”

I Share, I Give
Mathematics
Students are asked to create an organization, to choose a cause and to organize a fundraiser. They answer the question "How can I make a difference in someone’s life?”

Our Band
Mathematics
Students are asked to plan a show and determine all the associated costs. They answer the question "What is a profit?"

Proverbs
Drama
Students learn about the role of money in society. They answer the question "What lessons can proverbs teach us about the role of money in society?”
