This learning and evaluation situation was created by the Ministère de l’Éducation as part of a research project to gather data on the learning of elementary students in Cycle Three when the Québec Education Program was first implemented.

Elementary Cycle One

À la recherche d’une île merveilleuse
Multidisciplinary situation
Parc Amizoo has closed its doors and pairs of animals of 18 different species are in distress on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Upon reading a newspaper article, students are invited to adopt a pair of animals to settle them on an island so they can be happy and free to roam with other animals. To accomplish this mission, students first have to learn more about the type of animal they are adopting by reading texts, including two information-based texts, an adventure story and a song that they can sing throughout the project.
To create a new habitat for their pair of animals, students have a series of problems to solve. Ultimately, they write a text in which they present the amazing island habitat they have created for the animals. Finally, a presentation is made of the models or murals students have created and of the texts they have written to show how the animals have adapted to their new home. Throughout the project, students reflect on the question “How can I resettle the pair of animals I have adopted on an amazing island?”Subject-specific Competencies
